BBB
BeagleBone Black - The Sixaola’s on board computer. For more details: http://beagleboard.org/BLACK
Darien
The province in Panama that borders Colombia
DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - Method to dynamically assign an IP to a computer
FDSN
International Federation of Digital Seismic Networks - This organization wrote the SEED manual for network, station and channel naming conventions. For more details: http://www.fdsn.org/
GPS
Global Positioning System - In our case used mostly for the PPS pulse to discipline the computer time.
LED
Light emitting diode - The little lights on almost all electronic things
Logger
Seismometer mode in which data is stored in the unit and someone has to go out to the field to retrieve it. (Mostly a thing of the past)
miniSEED
MiniSEED data is a stripped down version of SEED data which only contains waveform data. There is no station and channel metadata included.
NTP
Network Time Protocol - Method to get very accurate time from the Internet
ODF
OSOP Data Flow - SeisComP SeedLink plugin for Sixaola
SCNL
Station Channel Network Location - See the FDSN SEED manual for more details: http://www.fdsn.org/seed_manual/SEEDManual_V2.4.pdf
SEED
Standard for the Exchange of Earthquake Data - A data format intended primarily for the archival and exchange of seismological time series data and related metadata. The format is maintained by the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks (FDSN) and documented in the SEED Manual (http://www.fdsn.org/seed_manual/SEEDManual_V2.4.pdf). Originally designed in the late 1980s, the format has been enhanced and refined a number of times and remains in widespread use.
Sixaola
The river that marks the boader between Panama and Costa Rica
SL
SeedLink - Transport portocol for seismic data
Streamer
Seismometer mode in which data is streamed in real-time to a central data acquisition server
ZCS
Zero Config Server - Acquisition server that accepts connections from remote instruments (Sixaola, Darien or other device). In the ZCS, the MAC address is associated with an SCNL and a set of coordinates.
