Heatsinks and Raspberry Shake#
We often get the question, “Is there enough room between the Raspberry Shake (RS1D, RS3D, RS4D, etc.) to use heat sinks on my Raspberry Pi 2 / 3 Model B?”.
The answer is yes, if the heat sink is low profile. This heat sink, for example, would indeed fit over both the BROADCOM and SMSC chips on the 2 / 3 Model B: Digikey 1597-1046-ND.
See: https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/products/detail/seeed-technology-co-ltd/114990125/5482524.
The smaller of the two heat sinks (for the SMSC chip), will have to be offset a little to make room for the geophone wire connector.
Attention - DIY builds
For DIY builds, we recommend the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. If you opt for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ or 4 Model B, you will likely need to clip the PoE header pins before mounting the Shake board, as they can prevent the hat from seating properly.
